At a \u201cmajor lunar standstill\u201d the moon\u2019s northernmost and southernmost rise\/set points are at their greatest separation. <span class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"><span class=\"ms-1 inline-flex max-w-full items-center relative top-[-0.094rem] animate-[show_150ms_ease-in]\" data-testid=\"webpage-citation-pill\"><a class=\"flex h-4.5 overflow-hidden rounded-xl px-2 text-[9px] font-medium transition-colors duration-150 ease-in-out text-token-text-secondary! Some possibilities:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3232\" data-end=\"3433\">\n<li data-start=\"3232\" data-end=\"3302\">\n<p data-start=\"3234\" data-end=\"3302\">An astronomical calendar that included the moon as well as the sun<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3303\" data-end=\"3365\">\n<p data-start=\"3305\" data-end=\"3365\">Ritual or burial significance attached to lunar directions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3366\" data-end=\"3433\">\n<p data-start=\"3368\" data-end=\"3433\">A way to connect the monument to both solar and lunar cosmologies<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"3435\" data-end=\"3459\">The sceptic\u2019s view<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3460\" data-end=\"3802\">Not everyone is convinced. What this new work may reveal is whether the moon also played a role in the design and experience of the site \u2014 and whether past people marked a much longer lunar rhythm than previously assumed.
